Boston is a real sports town, even when the teams don't win. When they win, it's pretty much overload and insufferable for the rest of the world. Philly is the same way -- a real sports town. People take it way seriously. Same with Chicago, even though they don't win much of anything, and haven't since The Chicago Jordanians roamed the earth. Still, Chicagoans do love their teams, and they are loyal as fuck, and they get a pass for sticking with the Chubs for all those years. One could say New York is a sports town too, to a lesser extent because New York is also so many other things. Still, NY sports are part of the culture just because of the Yankmes and the history surrounding that, even if the Knicks and Giants and Jets suck. Hockey is also a big deal in NY, win or lose. I'd throw in Pittsburgh as well since they are pretty diehard and the Steelers are pretty historic.

Other than those five cities, not that many other great sports town. Sure, Niner fans are rabid, and they've had plenty to cheer about, but S.F. is getting more disjointed, not like L.A. but still starting to fragment. K.C. is nouveau riche. St. Louis hasn't won shit in a while. Nobody gives a shit about the Dallas Mavericks outside of Dallas, and the Cowboys are much more important and they eat butt. There are championships in all sports strewn about in other cities this century, but most of them are pretty anonymous.

I'm probably leaving something significant out, but if you're talking about real sports cities, I think Boston, Philly, New York, Pittsburgh and Chicago are the real deal. Detroit gets an honorable mention.

Don't know how long it's been since you have been here, but Dodgers fans, especially centering around the Hispanic crowd. Have become pretty rabid the last 10 years Might just be they are winning regularly. That always helps.

But their presence on the road is pretty staggering. In NY, in SD, in SF. I can't say whether Kings or Rams have strong followings, I tend to think it's more bandwagon Lakers are pretty loyal but also pretty decent usually.

From what I have seen, the cities you have described have pretty active bar scenes. The east coast cities have really obnoxious loud mouthed fans. Not sure how many of them are band wagon or not. I have met a lot of east coast fans whose baseball knowledge and brain extends to about their tongue and that's it
