Totally different player. Did see him whiff on the long LSU run in the first half, but also saw him make some really nice plays, plays he wouldn’t have made last year.
Agree. Mason Cobb is a total different player. He played well vs LSU, made A+ tackles, blew up running plays, got the closing seconds IT. Last year he stunk up the place. Very good, we need his renewed play and leadership.
My opinion is that Alex Grinch ran a pretty complex high risk high reward D. And I think that's ok if you're undermanned. I tend to think USC rarely is actually undermanned. I mean we think Utah has better athletes? Colorado? UCLA? Ok, perhaps Oregon now. So Grinch's D is predicated on high risk high reward behavior. And a LOT of pre snap shifts from the DL and adjustments of the LB behind them for gap control.
I think there is a lot of read and react to the D. Lot of decisions where everyone has to be on the same page and make the same decisions.
Just like offensive football has been dumbed down for the QB's today and this is why you see more playground, more streetball and more younger QB's playing? I think the cerebral D is a thing of the past and we are reverting to the "dumb" football player. Playing it straight.
Cobb was well known at Ok State for not being ahem, a genius. Putting him in the middle of Grinch's D and asking him to make assessments, and play off of the DL and even have his DB's play off of him was a tough task.
I think Lynn, like Riley on the O side. Benefits greatly from over coaching. From simplification. and from those headsets. I think the negative is at the higher levels of competition USC won't be able to outscheme people but I think this D and Riley's o will allow USC to beat the teams hey are supposed to beat. And typcially even when USC is down in recruiting as they are now, they still ahve more talent than 8-9 of the teams on the schedule. Figure a way to split the other 3-4 games and suddenly you have a 10-11 win season. Turn that into better athletes and now you're talking top shelf.
I think grinch was a shortcut and to say he didn't work out was an understatement.
Hahahaha, that “soft ass beach boy” put a Tigah on his ass. #7 had a huge hit too. Hell yeah. Trojans bring the top athletes and the fawking lumber again. I’m sure the B1G took notice that Daddy walked into the room.
