Hey pitsonslap - Of all the posters you are one of those I respect the most. And I TOTALLY get how anyone who received a championship prior to 1997 would feel as you do.

We quacks have the luxury of not seeing it that way however since we have none. Even our one title in the two major collegiate sports was decided by a playoff back in 1939, as is the way it should have always been for college football.

Can you imagine if we decided a college basketball champ by having the AP vote on the two best basketball teams at the end of the season? So much for March Madness.

Sure, hindsight is always king. But hindsight says the only true champion can come by the way of direct competition such as in a playoff situation. Until that point, it's basically a beauty contest comparing those teams which subjectively look the best.

Not sure why so many are up in arms with the truth here? It doesn't take away the fact you Trojans won a great number of championships, but in essence it's not a "true" championship as we customarily define such things nowadays.
