Lynn learned at the feet of Mike MacDonald at Baltimore. He’ll be bringing the same concepts to the table for the Bruins.
First off, the bottoms line is that defense is about players and execution. Any type of defense can have success - 3-4, 4-3, 3-3-5, etc. Base alignment vs spread will be 2 inside LBs and edges out wide like Michigan’s in 2021 when MacDonald was the DC there. Edge players will be in a motorcycle stance. Very gap sound. The front will be extremely aggressive in their own gap. Vs. Utah the base will be a true 3-4 with the OLBs off the line and the ends in a 3-point stance. The scheme is sound. It’s all about execution. The Bruins need to add another edge rusher to go along with Latu or Gabriel Murphy will have to get more pressure. There will be some complicated pressure schemes where Latu will drop off into coverage. The safeties will be more aggressive. The star player (nickel) will
be up at LB depth at times and used as another rusher. The Ball State transfer will fill this role. He’s a physical safety. Kamari Ramsey will be the starting FS. He has the speed and was a ball hawk in HS. Looks like McGovern will stay on in some capacity. The Bruins may also add another defensive consultant or two. Fixing the defense is priority number 1. The good news is they have the players now but also hope to add a few more transfers for the defense.
