The Mtn West sat around and did nothing -- nearly lost their biggest market(San Diego) which would have led to other members leaving -- but are now in position to become the dominant conference in the west.
That's certainly the motive for the mtn west teams to follow wsu and osu. Otherwise the cougs and beavs have got nothing. No leverage
