Makes sense. Oregon keeps losing out to Alabama, tOSU, and recently especially Georgia, on 5-star recruits.
Cool we are even in consideration, but objectively speaking two things are hurting our chances:
Lack of a playoff win since 2015
Remaining in basically a dead conference
Without a change to one or both of the above, Oregon will likely still do well in recruiting (Top 7-15), but not great (Top 1-6).
Are Top 7-15 classes enough to get to the playoffs? Maybe not now, but definitely when things open up to 12 teams. And then, more than anything, it becomes a game of attrition--who can stay healthiest and who has the deepest roster? And that last point is greatly compromised by the transfer portal.
It's a different world now. For instance, every championship won by USC was based on playing no more than 13 games.
When Oregon played tOSU for the championship in 2015, that was our 15th game of the season. And the team was on fumes by that point.
Let's say Oregon goes to playoffs in 2024 but doesn't get a first-round bye. My quacks could play up to 18 games for the championship! Looking at 13 regular season games since 1 is at Hawaii + 1 CCG + up to 4 playoffs games.
That's crazy. The landscape is changing, and roster depth more than ever before is now EVERYTHING.
riley is a long term recruiter. So when he came to USC he wet after kids he already knew and then gave up on a year or two of classes. Went transfer. But notice now a lot of HS kids are coming. But IMO the 5 stars want NIL money and I also think 5 stars want proven success on the field at elite level. And for you to show you play HS incoming kids. USC has some of the above. Not all. I think it;s been on the fast track and honestly I think the program is about 2-3 years ahead of where I would have predicted it to be best case scenario. Caleb has had a lot to do with that.
Bama is about to flip a 5-star LB from Georgia. It would give them 4 5-star recruits for 2024. Saban basically gets whoever he wants.
not USC....no chance

Alabama and UGA are just on another level. Kinda disappointed Riley cant capture more 5 stars. Maybe a playoff appearance will change that.
