He’s either going to be Mike leach. His mentor And be content to have amazing entertaining offense. and probably better teams than leach because leach was a bit of an iconoclast.
or he’s going to be Steve spurrier.
Spurrier you may recall helped revolutionize football with his spread. 4-5 wr. Shotgun. Throw it a lot. Part of a group of offensive innovators in the 90s.
The knock against spurrier as it is against Riley. was that he didn’t care about defense and lost big games 56-55
yoi might recall he went and paid big money to hire bob Stoops. Don’t remember where stoops was before but he was highly thought of. Helped spurious win a nc or two and propelled stoops to the ok job. Where he won one himself. Ok lost a couple other cg.
anyway. Riley is likely to find his stoops or maybe grinch is that guy. But I think and hope Riley will find that shoring up that side will make his life a lot easier.
to be fair. Saban was the same way with offense. Alabama was built at the beginning of their dynasty on Defense. Saban is a d guy. Only later did the hotshot outsiders come in and elevate Alabama to where they are now with the innovations they’ve experienced.
takes some time. We will see if Lincoln figures it out .
I hope he can be successful keeping grinch and I get youbhave to give the guy more than a year
but so far the answer is option 1
My problem is he worked for stoops. You don't think they haven't already had this conversation, yet he still chose to stick w Grinch thru the move to USC? He knew what he had and he knew it wasn't good enough yet he still made that call.
Sorry but you already have the answer to your question. Its the wrong one.
To SC
Do you think Stoops is looking for a gig as an emeritus DC?
What is there to figure out? It's plain to everyone that the defense is a problem. Riley is too smart not to see that. Hell, Helton is smart enough for that.
What's not clear is whether Riley thinks he can power through by just amping up the offense or whether he truly believes Grinch is a guy who, given a short amount of time, will improve the defense to the point where the offense doesn't have to score 50 every game to feel comfortable. There's little evidence of that so far. At the same time, there's no evidence Riley believes he needs an elite DC to be successful.
I'm sure Riley's evaluation of Grinch as a DC is clouded by friendship and loyalty. So maybe what he has to figure out is whether to make staffing decisions based on his head or his heart.
Bob Stoops is only 62 years old. sc
