The only positives I have are fewer penalties than his other visor wearing predeccesors and QB recruiting and pedigree. 3-4 Heismans in 7-8 years is something. It's not a championship, but it is something..

It all boils down to you guys paying 100+ million for Caleb Williams. Riley is nothing without a QB. Without Caleb, it will be tough sledding.

You could say that about almost any team. Every team has a key player, that without the, they would lose more games. A good coach goes out and get that player or two.

Anyone who believes this team is a handful of plays from being a championship contender truly needs either psychiatric or ophthalmological help.

This team didn't just regress from last year (different team, obviously), it regressed from game to game over the course of the season. The OL looked serviceable at the start; the second half of the season it looked overmatched every week. The receivers were wide open the first 5 games but since then every throw is into a tight window. The run defense was exposed by Colorado and then lauged at by Cal and Washington. The defensive back seven still don't know where to stand or which way to run when the ball is snapped. Special teams are a special kind of awful.

And the in-game coaching is atrocious; always two steps behind, 1-2 timeouts wasted every week to avoid delay of game penalties.

I'm sure hiring a competent DC will improve things but there is so much more that needs to be addressed. I'm just not convinced the people who need to address those issues even believe they are issues. That's a problem.

That is true but last year there were a handful of plays that did end up going our way and our W/L record looked a lot better as a result which makes it seemed like we regressed this year.

In all the big games last year, except Tulane, SC came to play. UCLA, Notre Dame. Had Utah beaten in SLC. Were killing Utah in the CCG before Williams blew his hamstring.

This year, not so much -- Notre Dame and UCLA in particular. Last year, they looked well coached on offense at least. Second half of this year they looked poorly coached on all sides of the ball. That's the regression I see.

Last year our offense was better because we had a more experienced (games played together) OL, Dye and Addison. This year, the better defenses didn't have to worry about a star WR or a RB that could block, run and catch and as a result could more easily exploit weaknesses in our OL.

Not to make excuses but I think the 9 week stretch without a bye along with losing 4 out of 5 deflated both sides of the ball (FWIW, UO, UW and UU all got October 7th off whereas USC hasn't had a week off since September 16th). UCLA was going to be a dogfight even if we were at full strength but depth issues also took its toll and whatever the team had left in the tank was spent in Eugene.

That's possible. And I don't think USC quit, contrary to what others are saying. But there's a difference between being fatigued and not showing up. The latter is more a state of mind, a mental fatigue. I've been on teams that didn't show up, and it's usually the result of mental fatigue more than anything else, but it almost always accompanies a losing streak. So, I can see it. In times like that, you really have to dig down deep and play for pride, especially if there's not much at stake, i.e. post-season.

A while back (10+ years ago), UW had their BYE in Week 1 of the season and then played 12 straight.

But another big issue was NCAA rules on when fall practice can begin (X amount of days before the first game). While every other team started their fall drills, UW lost a whole week of valuable fall practice sitting around.
