I hear he was a really nice guy. It's too bad that he's gone because a lot of people are going to miss him. But as a radio sports broadcaster the guy absolutely sucked. Seriously, he was terrible. Anybody who says otherwise either never listened to him or is a close personal friend.
I can post this on this site because this is not a UCLA board. People posting anything negative about him on BRO are getting mega-downvoted. I know it's impolite to speak ill of the dead, and I'm NOT glad the guy is gone. But the day he retired from UCLA Sports was a good day for UCLA Sports...at least in the broadcasting department.
Knowing UCLA they will probably give the job to Beth Mowins and let her broadcast on a webcam mic from her living room while watching it on TV, so it will be a weird delay.
I will say it, he was terrible. I would get so frustrated listening to him on the radio. Bad in football, but absolutely atrocious in basketball. Plus, bad shit seemed to happen when I would turn the radio on and listen to him. Turnovers, or some big play against UCLA. How many times during a basketball game would ask "is that a foul"?That being said, by all accounts, he was widely liked.
At least you said it. I felt bad saying it for years.
him turning every 2nd and 10 run for 3 yards into a breathless over dramatic “3rd down U. C. L. Aaaaaaa!!!!“. Got really old really fast. I’m sure he loved his school but an announcers job is really doing the job or some level of objectivity of fandom. Maybe some bruins liked that
having Said that I’ll turn it around. When I got to usf and beyond. Having grown up listening to vin scully? Hearing Tom Kelly was one of the most embarrassing things ever. And Pete arbogast is just only one step better. Not sure why two schools with such amazing journalism and pr and acting and all the other things they have can’t get someone to do a better job
HA, I think it was an ongoing thing filled with variations, there were balls coming from all direction, but they just couldn't seem to get around the Trojans.
Never heard anyone say a bad word about him, but I wasn't a fan of his work. Especially on basketball, you had to listen for the crowd reaction to know what was going on. The crowd was always a few beats ahead of the call.
I know a lot of utla fans hated him, but I thought he was pretty good.
I knew Chris's family. His kid was a decent baseball player. His wife divorced him only to remarry him. Always struggled with weight. I guess that's what happens when you marry an Italian broad. Never even saw a photo when he wasn't smiling. sc

R.I.P., Chris.
His "Twin Ball Sack" Call was right up there with the greats.
More affable than on top of the action and players' names the ucla fans might say. That's how I recall their feelings for him.
