If you ever want to check out an underrated road movie that feels like an indie even though it really wasn't, check out The Rain People from 1969, directed by Francis Coppola. It stars James Caan, Shirley Knight, and Robert Duvall. Caan plays a former college football player rendered mentally damaged by injury. He hitchhikes and is picked up by a pregnant woman who is running away. It's an interesting film, one of Coppola's most personal. Coppola later said that those are the types of movies he really wanted to make, but The Godfather changed all of that. Anyway, you rarely saw James Caan play that type of role. Rest in peace, Jimmy. We'll miss you.
