California is no longer a hotbed of football recruiting. Demographics, woke schooling, soccer preferences, obsequious mentalities and numerous other factors have gradually resulted in degraded competition at the SoCal high school level. A few schools are good, but overall lack of competitive balance and development results in very few prospects compared to prior decades. Players are much harder to grade due to the disparate and insubstantial competition.
We are recently witnessing a much greater percentage of 5 star SoCal flops compared to prior decades - not only USC enrollees, but also those who enroll elsewhere. There is much more competition in the corn belt and south, especially for trenchmen and linebackers. Riley would be smart to devote more time in those areas, especially now that we are in the B1G.
All true. CA demographics trends are actually a disaster for power football programs. Fine for 7 on 7 passing leagues but not "trench" warfare.
But this game had 70 guys with offers. Have to be 4-5 starters in that group. Prob more. MD & SJB do the recruiting for a coach. They grab athletes from 5 counties across SoCal and move the kids to "their district". Its one stop shopping. Its like the Caesars Palace buffet of SoCal HS football.
very bad look. 2nd biggest visible mistake he's made here, to keeping grinch this year. there is no USC game, no practice, it's at the coliseum and has the most D1 players on one field -- ever -- from all classes.
Probably busy drinking his mai tai and watching the sunset from his patio overlooking the Pacific ocean...it's a rough life for a coach that gets his millions a year win or lose:-). Seriously I would hope he was doing his homework in his office going over candidates for DC and replacments for some other characters he has on his staff..
If he was there last year when we were headed to the CCG game and local recruiting didn't really improve afterwards, I'm going to assume that maybe something else is going on behind the scenes. We did mysteriously lose a few local recruits over the past year, namely Dylan Williams and Dakoda Fields, and never seemed to be in the running for some others so I don't know what's going on but I don't think it's as simple as building better relationships. But maybe he and the staff are just crappy recruiters, I don't know.
At the same time, he does have a defensive overhaul on his plate though so maybe to the rest of us it's as simple as stepping out for a few hours and showing up but maybe they're conducting interviews and doing their research?
He's out of his depth, but what else is he going to do? All he's beendoing since his teenage years is drawing up route tree diagrams. That's all he knows.

He's a shithead that has low work ethic. Too busy getting sushi in Santa Monica.

No. He sent his "best" recruiter.
But since SC is striking out in recruiting, maybe he needs to go too?
