Any coach who sees himself as an offensive guru does not want to have a good defense. It is not a flaw in their system. It is a feature. Having a bad defense allows them to to express themselves as much as they want because they always need more points. Points are like crack to a guy like Riley. He needs the opposing teams to score points so he has an excuse to keep the foot on the gas.
Also, an offensive guru knows that the DC will take 100% of the heat by almost everyone when his team loses. He has his scapegoat ready to be sacrificed. All he has to do is give a little lip service to improving the defense and everyone buys it. His status takes no hits when he loses because It's the defense's fault. Bob Toledo, Kliff Kingsbury, Mike Leach, Chip and Riley all fit the mold.
The problem is that all offensive gurus have an expiration date. Sooner or later they get passed by guys who have the latest and greatest concepts. Nobody stays on top as a guru. Once they lose it, they lose everything.
this approach works when you're trying to get a foot in the door and build a reputation, but at some point you actually have to win something. This approach won't allow that to happen.
Except kingsbury has a hot gf. A cushy nfl check and a usc job. Chip and Riley are collecting $500,000 and $10 million a year respectively. Both employed. Leach coached as a head coach in the sec to the day he died. Bobs happily feasting at a big boy somewhere.
I don't think that word means what you think it does
