Many people have wondered why, of all the coaches out there, Switzer called Terry Donahue and told him that he had a great QB who would be a star. Everyone knows Switzer had Jamelle Holloway who was perfect for the wishbone. He was probably the best QB ever at running the wishbone.
Anyway, Switzer felt that he owed one to the Bruins. Why? Well, in the 1976 Rose Bowl, the Bruins beat the #1 ranked Buckeyes and Woody Hayes. The Bruins shut down 2-time Heisman winner Archie Griffin and Wendell Tyler ran for over 160. The Bruins’ win opened the door for the Sooners whose Orange Bowl game started shortly after the Rose Bowl ended. A pumped up Sooners team went on to beat Michigan. Switzer won his second Natty. He never forgot what UCLA had done. Good guy.
good guy? yeah, just don't let him pack your luggage for a flight...
and then there was that shower incident in Norman. sc
Good story, strong imagination
As a Banning Pilot I got to watch Jamelle Holieway ( not Holloway) up close and personal on the hallowed grounds of our practice field. I was a couple of years older than Holieway, so I never practiced against him. But I watched him from the sideline. A magician. I had the opportunity to practice with Stanley “the steamer“ Wilson instead , 4 year starter with the Sooners and an Oklahoma, Cincinnati and San Quentin legend. Jrob and Switzer were on our campus often. Switzer landed on our football field in a helicopter. Switzer was the keynote speaker at our football awards banquet. He got Stanley, Holieway, and a bunch of others. But USC got more, Ty Sperling, Michael Alo, the Reece brothers, Danny and his WR brother, (can’t recall his first name) FB Leroy Holt And many more. UCLA got Freeman McNeil, who was a senior when I played on the JV team, and Danny Andrews.
The golden era of City 4A HS football. We would get 40,000 in the Coli. Banning vs Carson baby. Battle Royale. Both schools led by legendary coaches, Chris Ferragamo for the Pilots and Gene Vollnogle for the Colts. Vince Ferragamo played at Banning way before I reached puberty.
That’s true, can you imagine what Dick Vermeil would have done had he stayed at UCLA? No way could they match the salary the Eagles offered him back in those days.
Barry Switzer also said UCLA should be awarded the National Championship they destroyed the best team in the nation.
Steve Owens and Thomas Lott were better at running the wishbone than Holloway.
Aikman never beat USC. He got gifted two losses. All for a broken leg vs Miami.
Too bad Aikman was so shitty. Every other NFL QB who ever lived is currently better, including the retired ones and especially the dead ones.
