Didn't need to be huge only loaded with quality players that never or seldom saw the field...few examples from my younger days...Jim Fassel JC AA QB who ended up transferring to Utah and eventually coaching, Rich Leon, two time JC AA who had his short career ended at Miami when he was punting, Leonard Sims great JC AA TB, named POY on Redshirt team and then disappeared...I remember these kids because Iived in OC back then and they all played at schools around me......as McKay once said "its not the X's and O's that win football games but rather the Jimmy's and Joe's"....

big difference.. Some players on the bench on McKay's teams werent getting paid money (at least in the open) than some of the starters and other non-starters. Completely different environment, where kids today can complain they are not playing or getting paid enough money, and then leave on a whim without penalty if they dont get what they want. McKays players that were unhappy on the bench, were stuck there. Couldnt transfer without losing a year and couldnt transfer within the conference without losing two years. They were stuck with no options.

There were always some that came to SC and were likely to ride the bench when they could have possibly starred at another school, but the big difference is that in McKays time the players were stuck because of transfer rules. Today, if the player is unhappy with either playing time or money, he can walk out and leave the team with no penalty. Big difference. If Oregon pays players just to keep them away from SC and there making more money than some of starter and other contributors in the rotation, then there will be some problems.
