Tough game for us. But not heartbreaking.

SC got invited with a 6-5 record, capped by a 27-0 shutout of a team that had been ranked #4 (in the nation) a month before but ended the season without a bowl invitation.

That would have been Toledo's last stand if I'd been the A.D. But Buffet Bob was around for another year, and things didn't get any better.

The timing was wrong in '01. Dalis hadn't officially retired, but he was on his way out; Guerrero wouldn't be the A.D. until 2002. And there was no way Dalis was going to make a decision on the head football coach in his last year as A.D., so no one was really minding the shop.

And then Guerrero hired Karl Dorrell and, well, you know the rest. What a complete clusterfuck.

I had high hopes for that 2001 team. They beat Alabama in Bryant-Denny Stadium to start the year, and then they beat Ohio State at the Rose Bowl a couple of weeks later. They started 6-0 and were as high as #4 in the polls. But after they lost to Stanford, the first loss in a four-game skid, everything went to hell. The Foster SUV thing happened (can't remember how the weed figured in), then Cory Paus and the DWI thing, and the season turned into complete shit. Like I said, if I were the A.D. after the USC debacle, I'd have shoved my foot so far up Toledo's ass that I would've had to pry open his mouth in order to tie my shoe.

By the way, the Bruins finished 7-4 but unranked. They decided against any bowl invitation for fear of losing money in a Shitass Bowl, which clearly was all they were going to get.

that game proved that Kiffin was bs as OC. Players have to fit his x's and o's even if they don't have the skillset. what a joke.

Watching old Knock-Kneed Pete hobble out to mid-field in his little corrective shoes to slap Karl Dorrell on the cheek was a moment.

That was the year before, 1992. That game sucked, but so did we. But the 92 game did carry into why the 93 game felt so important to me at the time.

Yeah that 8 (?) year losing streak was brutal. Had my heart ripped

out over and over in those games. We lost them all and point differential was prob less than 20 points combined lol. So many close losses/victories there

in most of those matchups.

We had won so much for so long it made this bearable for me. We also had beaten The Bruins so much with Carroll it also helped.

Lastly we were going to get hosed by BCS/formulas/coaching polls either way. Happened every time.

Losing to UCLA is never "okay because we’ve beaten them enough." SC had everything set up to advance to a very winnable NC game and got outplayed by a bad coach with a mediocre team.
