UC Regents Assert That They Have The Authority

With Cal Athletics being bankrupt, carrying interest-only payments on its 471 million dollar stadium debt, everything counts. It's lovely seeing, UCLA a tax-sucking parasitic leach on the soft underbelly of the taxpayer now getting another tax-sucking leach attached to its own blue and gold belly. Two UC parasites joined together in a regents celebration of suckiness,.

"UC regent John Perez additionally told The Times after the session ended that the regents do indeed have the power to block UCLA’s move.

“All options are on the table, up to and including (blocking the move)," Perez told The Times "… We’re going to look at what all the different options look like and then the board will assert itself in terms of what its desired outcome is.”

I find it hard to believe they can tell a school what conference they can play in.

Unless…..

There is some clause that states all conferences that UC schools play in must be in or from California.

The authority to enter into contracts vests through legislative act with the central authority of the Regents. A couple decades ago they delegated authority to the campus chancellors, but retained the authority. So in the end the campus can only do what the regents deems permissible. Further state bodies have broad authority to cancel contracts for "Convenience". As the sovereign, the state is immune from suit and has authority to make capricious contract decisions in the name of the best interests of the people.

Thats the logical outcome. UCLA cant afford to walk away from the money in the B10. Paying off Cal is the best financial solution. Underlying this situation is Cals 471 million dollar debt from its stadium redo. Cal Athletics runs an deficit of around $20,000,000 annually, in recently published figures, while it is only paying interest--no prinipal. Stadium debt already absorbs 20 percent of intercollegiate athletics' annual income, or roughly $18 million of its $89 million budget. And that pays only the interest.

Cal won't start paying down the principal until 2032, when its yearly payments rise to $26 million, then $37 million, before tapering off in 2051. After a brief respite, Cal will owe a lump sum of $82 million in 2053 alone. All of which is why Gov. Dinglefuck is trying to get UCLA to subsidize Kal.
