Great song. Still vividly remember playing it over and over, marching down Colorado Blvd in the Rose Bowl parade. The tuba section sets the base tone for the song and we enjoyed blasting it out.
Funny story. The tuba section had a wierd custom of requiring all the members to chug a bear along with a swig of cold Boston Baked beans before each home game, while we were warming up. One year, one of the incoming freshman didn't want to go along with the custom, so after refusing to take a swig of the cold beans, the whole quart size can of beans was thrown inside the bell of his tuba.
Still remember how the beans eventually started to run out of the bell and because it was so hot, they actually became caked on the bell. He refused to clean the bell, so it stayed that way for the entire season.
Agree. Our band always shows up. Love road games and battle of the band events. The Orange Bowl match ups against the Iowa and Oklahoma bands were as lopsided as the football games. Their bands looked confused and couldn’t even set up on stage. Our band looked like they have performed on the biggest of stages. Polished.
