The irony of this is that they took this guy from the pirate two summers ago. It was a big coup He’d worked for leach for 18 years. Got credit for being on the forefront of college football trends and how to run a program. This guy is like the GM of football at USC.
Considering Riley coaches under leach. Played under leach. Felt leach was a mentor. He has to know this guy well and I’m more than a little surprised he wants him gone this quickly. That’s got ronubdeemjne Jenn’s confidence in li coln by a lot
Sorry to continue to burst your bubble, but it's NOT all about the final dollar amount with recruits. For a few, sure. But most want to be somewhere they can win a championship and a place that has recently demonstrated success, where they can feel like family and also be developed, and know their coach will be there for 3-4 years.
Sounds a lot like Oregon. Not sure if that sounds like SC right now, though.
If the NIL bids are competitive, guess which place he's gonna choose? What's gonna be the deciding factor? For many it's not just going to be the top dollar amount.
Good give up because it is money for the type recruits you are getting for the most part with a few exceptions like locals and legacy's...just yesterday a Trojan Assistant Coach was talking about how these kids don't look to their future but to the immediate cash...and the difference in getting or losing a player can be a very small amount of difference in cash with no consideration of what the degree and associations that can be made can do for a kids future...heck they pointed out in the case of the big buck NIL's the difference in cash can be as little as $100k....but the big takeaway was the kids want as much money as they can get right now regardlless of coaching and long term success..
The highly-ranked kids Oregon is getting verbals from are all eyeing the NFL, as they should be at their level coming out of HS. You are also underestimating the effect of the NIKE connection here as well which is well-documented.
Your back-up punter is probably quite happy with a USC diploma. These kids who have greater ambitions (albeit perhaps misguided) don't care. And I don't either. You don't really care either, but are just sour due to USC's own NIL limitations.
High-level recruiting has ALWAYS been about the money for the recruits and their families. For every blue-blood program, yes even at your vaunted USC, and at many others. It's just now it's above board instead of under the table or in the happy meal bag.
But I am personally digging the "Holier-than-Thou" attitude from our Trojan friends when it fits your narrative. 🤣
If you were to look back I posted a year ago or so about how NIL and Free Agency was right up Oregon's alley and they would be the school that had the biggest advantage with the lack of rules and Nike connection with that said I'm glad you see the light about it being about cash....and no foresight into what a degree and relations/connections for future success is going on...of course we are talking about 18 year old kids here...instant gratification over long term results. Uncle Phil is not going to give long term contracts to all the kids he is giving a bag too...and you left out the level of coaching a kid gets will determine future NFL opportunity and whether you agree or not I'll flatly state that the current USC coaching staff is superior to Oregon
Sounds like someone is getting set up to be a sacrificial lamb.
Recruiting has never been simpler: pay. That’s it, write a check.
The recruits tell you without much digging into it. Who is going to pay the most is the key factor. Then they throw in development as an afterthought. Education and location has even less to do with it than before NIL and it wasn’t a deciding factor then either.
The hard thing to accept is that USC is not playing the game in a meaningful way.Oregon and Ohio State are playing for keeps. What was Ohio States budget $12 mill? Something like that. Oregon has taken 2 of the top 10 players in Texas. That had to be crazy money. What’s happening with Sark? Texas is currently just barely in the top 20 in recruiting rankings” Right there with USC. Oregon is the model, here is hoping it turns out like ATM when they were buying top talent. I would like for USC to spend like Oregon but let’s be honest, we are too cheap and not quite as desperate.
Well House of Victory is only interested in getting people to subscribe for $25 and sending you a cheap hat. They then want to tell you how your funds are going to support the women's croquet team go read to transgender children as part of the JEP project, in an effort to balance racial inequity
If you think I am kidding, you are clearly not on the email list. I am.
When I emailed the one name on the HOV website who is listed as a development guy, I told him I had a few questions. That I felt soliciting 5-6 figure donations, which I was willing to discuss, would net them better recruits than $25 fast track donations on the CC. Told them oregon was kicking their tail on the trail and so was Ohio State and others. Looked forward to hearing from them and hearing their plans and supporting their efforts. Not surprisingly, never heard back.
USC has their little friendship group of people they go to when they need money, ignoring a massive Trojan pool of $ and people they could dip into. Always been that way. Ron Orr operated the same way. Most of these guys are lazy cocktail party types.
If a leader doesn't have the resources to complete, then a leader needs to manage upward. There are 1000s of ways Riley could navigate this. The money is there. Riley is NOT a winner.
They were impressed with Coach Henny and his record for developing players....and then USC reneged on what they had told them they would be provided...simple as that...
It’s a work in progress. This will work itself out. I’m not sure that over paying for so called 4/5 stars is necessarily the way to go. There is going to be a lot of buyers remorse in the very NEAR future. There are schools who have been trying to be relevant , I.e. , Texas A&M and they are still irrelevant.
I will admit I don't understand all the intricacies of how NIL works. Certainly not at USC. Do you?
Riley's call in show is an absolute joke. He sits at his desk and takes prescreened softball questions.
I heard him describe why he didn't like living in Norman. It's not much bigger than San Clemente. He didn't like being bothered when he left his house. Wanted his privacy. I am sure he didn't like lots of things about his job there. Who doesn't at any job.
I still have no idea what his ME TIME staycation was all about in the middle of the season last year. Never even heard of anything like it.
Have you heard squat about summer workouts? Something? Anything? Nope, cause he's a paranoid control freak. Do you know that he won't even let someone that endowed not just donated to a position on the football team watch practice? Are you freaking kidding me?
This is USC. Being a head coach is more than just coaching offense and playing with the quarterbacks. sc
Just listened to a USC talk show today...they said the person that's supposed to deal with the coordination of raising monies was not Riley but rather Jen Cohen. They also spoke about how the name Emmerick comes out every time the issue of a player drops USC over NIL and many other problems surrounding the Program...apparently the Head Coach and the Staff are getting pretty damn tired of having someone screw the closing on these players...as far as the workouts and practices, Saban did the same stuff and so do a lot of bigtime coaches...it has always been up to the media to find ways to find out the information you are looking for...it just so happens USC coverage by those guys suck unless it's handed to them on a golden platter...ever listen to the crap those guys call a show....terrible.
Time to get rid of Dave or reassign him. They were going after Courtney Morgan last week so I think the wheels are in motion to make a change. LR made the mistake of hiring guys he trusted when he came on board and I think he's learned his lesson.
