team rankings this early in the season don't mean much.
What matters is looking back at the end of the season and seeing how many top 25 teams you beat.
I remember BYU's claim to the natty was all the top 20 teams they beat. But at the end of the season they beat a 6 and 5 michigan in the holiday bowl. So they did not have a single win over a ranked team. NOT ONE.
Washington was ranked number 2 with one loss (against SC on the road) at the end of that season , but declined to face BYU in the bowl game because the orange bowl which they won against Oklahoma had a much bigger payout. sc
