USC tried in vain to pry AL's GM away. What exactly does a college football GM do and when did a college GM become a thing?

WHen you win natties, you are sought.
GM handles roster management and recruiting strategy. NIL and portal have made rosters so fluid you need to manage them daily just like a baseball GM. You need to know if you can’t get 5 star first choice who your 4 star backup or best 3 star safety option is.
That way losing a recruiting battle isn’t a 5 star or 0 proposition. I imagine a GM today also deals with salary cap and payroll. Which likely involves both players and trainers. Assistants etc.
They want coach to coach
Rumor has it USC offered him a cool $1M a year to be their GM.....but that's in California which doesn't buy anyone shet versus the $800,000 plus in Alabama....double the $1M and they may have had a deal...
Hey USC just hired Pete Carroll, maybe he can take over a similar position. I doubt Riley would enjoy Pete the Legend looking over his shoulder.
Sam Gilbert and Saint John Wooden created that position....college athletics has been going downhill ever since they did.
When CFB turned into Wolf of Wallstreet.
