There's another way to look at this and it still won't make any sense.
SC was ranked # 12 at the end of the 22 season following the loss to Tulane. Without playing a game they moved up six spots to # 6 AP to start the 23 season. Not really convinced they have gotten that much better than last year in the off season.
Move up in the polls following a loss and down when you win is the new logic.
Not overly worried as it's still top and a nd loss knocks them out regardless. And a nd win legitimizes them. As does a Utah win which would look and smell like progress and redemption

Has absolutely nothing to do with how SC has looked beating all those mighty teams.
America loves utah. so they moved up.
America is jealous of USC so SC moved down.

Because their win over the Bruins now has meaning. Sorry, but beating teams in OT ranked around 70 doesn't carry much weight
