I love him winning for us and this team. Love it!
And he is best scrambler I have seen since Johnny Football.
He had some dimes against Ucla. Jordan Addison one. But I dont think he is an elite thrower from an Accuracy or timing perspective. He is an elite athlete for sure with a bigtime arm. But as a make it rain guy I am not seeing it. I said this before Mahomes scrambles and finds an open dude way down field. CW often doesnt.
Kind of weird to me.
I think its also a testament to CLR coaching. Were one of top O’s in Country and were not throwing deep.
Just an observation & a counter narrative. Pulling for the young man who has resurrected our program. ✌️
You get paid for making 20 yd outs on the opposite side of the field. CW can make that throw, even off balance.
As for long throws, Al Davis died awhile ago. The emphasis on the bomb died with him.
Bump.
This is way better FB thread than Carol Folts email address…
PT what are you talking about. Have you watched any USC games this year. Most pro experts believe he would be the first pick in the draft if he was draft eligible. I will trust their judgement . Come on PT you are better than this.
I’ve written about this. His greatest strength is his ability to not take chances. And his mobility buys him time on the patterns where things aren’t completely open. He doesn’t throw into tight windows.
the problem is that in the nfl everything is a tight window. So what do you do? Tell a kid to throw more risky passes? More jump balls?
he absolutely has an nfl arm. Has the gun. Does throw many touch passes.
he sees target and hits target. Will never throw a ball before a guy makes his break.
so. For me? I love it. Perfect college or hs qb.
for the nfl? Little problem they probably feel they can grow out of him. Most qb have the opposite problem. Sam Darnold threw a lot in tight windows and needed superior wr at usc to make it work. And he had them. In the nfl he hasn’t. I mean. No one does. No wr in the nfl is that far superior to a db. To just throw 50-50 balls. So that among other reasons has caused Sam and others to struggle. But sam projected much easier and better to the nfl than caleb because in nfl you run less and throw into coverages more.
caleb can’t run as much in the nfl. Nonone can if they want a long career. Much as we celebrate mahomes and jackson those guys are more selective and limited in what they choose to do. Getting hit by a 255 Lb linebacker in the open field is like getting hit by a Toyota truck doing about 15-20 mph. It sticks with you
so when I think of nfl throws I think of fades. Sideline outs. Deep ins. Fast slants. And I think of hitting a guy who breaks as you throw.
I don’t see any of that and with all. The Caleb hype it’s weird to say that.
san c loves to point out I said he wasn’t elusive but in game 1 he wasn’t. Or 2. Now he was fast. He had the skills. But he was clearly trying to fit a mold. Point is he’s evolved this year from a guy who I said good luck on draft day to whoa look at those skills. He’s getting rid of balls oob. He’s taking off. He’s not staring guys down as much. He is not making up his mind or snap and locking in anymore. He’s elusive. Now. He clearly has progressed and we all saw the potential. He got there fast. Happened in a span of iD day 6-7 games mid season. I’d say he’s a better qb now that when they played Utah. so where does that leave us? Every great UFC quarterback, I can remember who chose to come back for another season. Rob Johnson, Carson, Palmer, Matt Leinart. All were vocal about working on NFL concepts their senior year, trying to become more sophisticated and elevate their game and re-defenses and make throws that they hadn’t before. On the surface that was crazy because they were great college quarterbacks but their coaches clearly were selling them on the idea that they had to get to the next level and this is what they needed to do their senior year.
I think Caleb will do that next year. I believe that next year will likely be a year where we see him try to mold his game to what the NFL is going to expect. It would not surprise me to see him take more chances throw into tighter windows, perhaps even make more of the calls himself and the reads himself rather than having Lincoln Riley see it from the side line and signal it in. Which is what’s been happening this year. In the NFL the quarterback needs to make that call sometimes as the clock whines down .
so long answer is yeah you’re right. He’s great but there’s a lot missing for an nfl resume and I hope that anyone can see I’m not criticizing him. im not sure if I call him the best qb in usc history but he’s the most unique. And I’d say he’s the most effective offensive weapon in usc history. And that includes bush. Leinart Oj. Carson etc. No one at usc has even been able to single handedly destroy another team like this.
funny example. Remember that scramble where he sprinted the other way. Got loose. Ran around the Dl to the right. Cut across the field left and took a 10 yard sack into a 30 yard gain? Sat on his butt and signaled first down? Next play was just an easy off tackle call to jones where it should have gained a yard or two. Boring predictable run. Runs ripped off a run of 8-11 yards and it was obvious he was running through a worn out tired defense that was also demoralized because nothing they tried worked. 60 minutes of hopeless. Screw it why are we even trying here? This is like trying to catch a greased pig. So Jones bashed them fkr 10 or so. That’s what caleb does. Like no one I’ve ever seen at usc.
this style has been coming on in cfb awhile and Johnny football. Lamar jackson. Kyler Murray and others have played it. Caleb isn’t the first. But for usc fans who have been on the outwidr looking in? This is manna from heaven to finally be playing modern football instead of stuck playing 1960: mc kay style as usc did until 2001. And then playing nfl style as they did until recently. Maybe sark and Harrell wanted to play this way but they never went and got the qb to do It. Riley can and does and now usc does. And man are they exciting .
I brought this up before. He doesn't make timing pattern throws. He doesn't throw the NFL out, so who knows if he can. He doesn't throw players open. NFL defenders can catch him. He's improving , but he has a long way to go before the NFL.
I am just happy he won heisman number 8 for SC. sc
