The 1991 team was a NC season. The 1990 team was a 2 loss team, 1 to eventual NC Colorado and an inexplicable loss to a mediocre UCLA team after UW clinched the Pac-10 championship and the Rose Bowl invite. But yes, that 1991 team was one of the best.
The 1984 11-1 team could be under consideration that finished number 2. That defense was very good and fun to watch however the offense was quite pedestrian.
But I might have to go for the '05 USC (was that the season of the Stanford or Oregon St upset?) or the '71 Oklahoma teams. Wasn't 1971 the year that Oklahoma, Nebraska and Colorado finished number 1, 2 and 3 (not sure of the order)?
Got me to thinking that Oregon has had 4 one-loss teams since 2001.....
2001
2010
2012
2024
I probably wouldn't nominate any of them for "best ever".
But for some of us quacks who used to simply pray for a winning season of 6+ wins, the concept of having any Oregon teams with only 1 loss is still fairly mind-blowing.....
1948 Notre Dame. 9-0-1. Finished #2 in the rankings. The Irish were national champs in '46, '47 and '49. A tie with USC was the only blemish on their '48 record and it prevented ND from winning four straight national titles. I had an uncle who graduated from ND in '50 and he never saw the Irish lose a game during his time there.
Yup. Should have split the NC with Bama that year. Really should have won it out right. Letting stanford come back from 21-0 in the coli with turk shonnert should never have happened. JRob went to sleep that 2nd half.
Off point, but the best college football I ever saw was the Washington Huskies when Emtman was there in the early 90s.
