Some of Y'all talk about Riley not being a great coach but really tell me who is? Franklin? Dabo? Jimbo? Sark? Kiffin? Right now probably the two best coaches in college football. At least based upon winning. Continue to be Saban and right now Kirby Smart. Some people thought UCLA headed out of the park when they got chip Kelly other side LSU hit it out of park when they got Brian Kelly clearly both were wrong urban Meyer maybe but he's come to the ton of baggage as does Michigan's coach I don't know much about Ohio State coach but isn't look consistent enough for me to call great yet so I would say based on quality of individual as well as win loss record, as well as player development at least a quarterback USC probably hired one of the top five coaches in college football. Go to the NFL and tell me anybody who's been better than Belichick in the last decade consistently better , nobody. even a Sark, when he was it SC he came with a ton of baggage as did kiffin in USC's entire history which is been spectacular they've been three great coaches are good coaches, McKay, Robinson, and Carol and I think right now the man they've got with the right defensive coordinator and staff has the potential to be the fourth Time motel but you guys tell me who are the great coaches that are at their great guaranteed coaches in this new modern game of college football work athletes are making more money than the coaches are with NIL deals

That's the wrong question. Riley isn't even competent, which he proved AGAIN with going for 2 at the wrong juncture of the game. He makes the same stupid mistakes OVER AND OVER and never learns. The man does not understand how football needs to be played and he refuses to learn from past mistakes (yet another guy who thinks he's the smartest guy in the room when he's probably the dumbest). Riley will not win anything at USC and his performances going forward will continue to circle the drain. Time to cut bait otherwise you're just wasting time.
A great coach learns and always seeks and usually gets improvement, game over game, year over year. CLR has NEVER improved at any part of the game in any year.
First define what makes a great college football head coach.
It's pretty simple. And it's rare. and no it doesn't require winning every game.
A great coach gets the most out of what he has to work with. He assembles and manages great assistants, who can be easily measured by stats. He is able to recruit great players consistently.
A great head coach's teams get better as the season progresses in all aspects of the game.
A great coach evolves with the game .
Maybe CLR will become a great coach someday. I think he can . Dude is smart . He's been paid in advance so he has to really want it. And I mean really want it. That's his biggest hurdle.
That means he can't choose friendship , like keeping grinch ,over what is best for the team . etc.
He has to admit mistakes like his current strength coach and lack of a special teams coach.
CLR has to see by now that defense is his major weakness .Actually do a real deep dive this time and put in the work to find the best proven dc he find and he can manage. That is no easy task . He could use a good consultant. Maybe Pete Carroll or. Garry Patterson has some ideas.
It's up to Riley. Does he want it that bad? The changes he makes or doesn't make should give us an idea fairly soon. He's never done a rebuild before.
As usual I have my doubts. sc
There is a guy, just turned 40 years old. Has won 82% of his games, He is 73-16 . Has the third best winning percentage of all active coaches. In 7 seasons he has already been to the playoffs three times and has coached three Heisman winning QB's. At his age and years of experience you can assume his best his yet to come. High ceiling. Look at the fellating of Sark and Kiff by the same people that wanted them fired at USC. Sometimes you just need to give young coaches some time to grow. Dabo, not long ago was called a great coach. The worm turns. I say we give this young coach more than 1.5 years to turn USC into what we know it can be. He will do great things at USC.
