We know this ..his resume is pretty thin to get an HC job at P5 school. Pete Carroll had a resume that showed he was prepared to be a HC and at P5 conference...Iowa St and Ohio St Secondary Coordinator, North Carolina St Defensive Coordinator, Pacific Defensive Coordinator, Buffalo Bills Defensive Back Coach, Minnesota Vikings Defensive Back Coach, New York Jets Defensive Coordinator, New York Jets Head Coach, San Francisco 49ers Defensive Coordinator, New England Patriots Head Coach...,.all before he was HC at USC...
@OldHickoryTrojan All good points, Old Hic. It's a gamble, for sure. Lanning was the best available guy out there. Some reports out of Oklahoma had him being offered the OU job. He ended up running 2nd for that job. Someone somewhere must think awfully highly of him...not just Oregon's AD.
Elated to roll the dice on a DC in the playoffs rather than end up with an underachiever like Wilcox or other more-established coaches out there. And one of the top recruiters in the nation--we need that in Eugene.
@LA Duck I will ad another reason I'm not sold on this hire and would think Kiffin would have been a better choice even though I was never a fan...Nick Saban siad with today's offenses you can;t play great defense so you better be able to score a lot..and if you hadn't noticed zsban changed his whole offensive scheme because he felt they needed to put more points on the board then the other guy..
@the909trojan probably Low balled him. apparently they came back to Wilcox twice. Shocking Oregon is so cheap. They lowballed CristobaLLL on his ext3nsion too. Wilcox is gonna end up fired, just like Chip.
@the909trojan rumor is that Donte was ready to join Wilcox at Oregon. Wilcox, unexpectedly and quite shockingly declined the job, Donte took Rileys offer.
@the909trojan Not necessarily holding out for a better job but waiting for a job that is the right fit. UO is not the right fit for most coaches right now unless they are coordinators that will take any job as a stepping stone.
The only surprising thing is that Wilcox actually interviewed for the job. Well, not really surprising as Wilcox is very frustrated at Cal but It is pretty well known that Wilcox, like Petersen, just does not like the culture UO has become. So you have to go the assistant route who is begging for any HC position for a step up.
And may I add an "AMEN" to that.... 😆
BTW Dana Altman was Oregon's 5th or 6th choice, too....Carroll was something like a 3rd or 4th choice as well IIRC......you just never know.
It’s amazing when you think about it…he’s from Eugene, grew up in Oregon.
Wilcox wanted it, but was pissed because they offered it first to Mora.

So Lanning was the 5th choice. Ouch
