"The Belt", from what I gathered, was created by a couple of young college football fans in the 80's. The concept is simple: the 1st Belt was won by Rutgers when they defeated Princeton in 1889 and follows the team that beat the current Belt holder.
UW currently has The Belt, taking it away from Oregon last season, who took it away from BYU, who took it away from Baylor, who took it away from..........
UW has successfuly defended The Belt 11 times now.
Some fun looking at the data. USC took The Belt from Michigan in the 2004 Rose Bowl and and defended The Belt 25 times 2004 - 2006.
Miami under Butch Davis took The Belt from Fla St in 2000, shortly after UW beat them in Husky Stadium, and defended The Belt 31 times.
One very interesting series in The Belt ownership happened in the late 70's. USC took The Belt from Alabama in the 1978 USC championship season but lost it to ASU in their first year in the Pac-10 (after losing to a mediocre WSU team). ASU lost The Belt the very next game in a 7-41 blowout loss to UW, which that game was the beginning of the end for Frank Kush, who puched his punter after a shank. USC took The Belt back later that season from UW, then defended The Belt for 24 games, utill USC lost it to......UW in the 1980 season (which clinched UW's 1981 Rose Bowl berth). UW beat the Cougs but lost it to Michigan in the Rose Bowl.
In 1931, Oregon posessed The Belt for a single game but lost it to that powerhouse St Mary's College. Oregon took The Belt back in 1934 but lost it three game later to................UW.

Prior to the belt, there was a pair of spats.
I need to see the buckle before I take interest in this belt. There should be notches for every defense. I wonder if USC has the most. Better hope you defend it because it likely goes back to Oregon the following week. Maybe you can try to re-retrieve it in Vegas. Now you have me thinking about this dumb belt.
Was there ever at any time an actual belt? sc
Pooty Tang knows the power of the belt

Sounds like something a bunch of grade school girls would make up and follow to enhance their enjoyment of their dads' favorite sporting event.
You want a belt, Husky? All I know is, should everything fall into place, Oregon's players can't wait to take the belt to Washington in the conference championship game on Dec 1st. 😂
I'm going to have a belt before kickoff.
who cares about belts. USC 11 NCs, 8 HTs, UDub 1,0. Only slightly better than Oregon's 0,1 and worse than UCAL's 1/2, 1 (OJ's).
These are the only tales of the tape that really matter.
