The preliminary numbers compiled by analysts at the firmCBREshow a vacancy rate for 2022 of around 27%, compared to 19% in 2021. That's nearly seven times the vacancy rate for 2019 of 4%, before the pandemic brought an end to San Francisco's long run as one of the nation's most coveted office markets.

In January 2021, sf.citi surveyed 83 tech founders and CEOs, the majority of whom said they plan to downsize their presence in San Francisco and factor local regulations into their decisions to grow (or not) in San Francisco.

San Franciscans are more likely to be thinking about skipping town in the next year than residents of any other major metropolitan area, according to new data.

The data was released by the American Housing Survey, a survey conducted once every two years by the U.S. Census Bureau, and shows that about 18% of residents of the San Francisco metropolitan area plan on moving from their home in the next year. Of those residents who said they plan on moving, nearly half, or about 8% of the metro area’s total population, say they plan on moving to a different city, the largest share of any major metro in the data.
