It's astonishing that physicians do not understand the dynamics of psychoactive and other compounds administered chronically. 45 years ago, it was demonstrated that chronic administration of compounds that stimulated a category of receptors caused a reduction in the density of those receptors (down regulation). Thus, less sensitivity to transmitters which stimulate those reception (e.g.,, opiate receptors). This results in a need (dependence) on the compound to maintain homeostasis. At the time, it only took 10 days; now, with more sensitive instrumentation, I am sure this can be demonstrated in a much shorter time.
